Shelly uses painting as a tool to invoke a stream of consciousness or to create grand, dream landscapes, investigating the vague or the irrational. Her approach to the medium of painting can be compared to the spirit of a free jazz musician, leaning on gut feelings and intuition, yet precise and particular in its intentions. Working with a minimal, almost ‘childlike’ or naïve palette, Shelly's works tend to touch on inner worlds, racial and gender issues, everyday life and personal experiences, all filtered out through the realms of her own vision.
